My name is Renee and I’m delighted to say that I will be the new University Hall (UniHall) Student Reporter.

I’m an international postgraduate student from Ontario, Canada studying a Masters of Strategic Communications. I must say, moving to Australia has been the biggest decision of my life so far. Australia is a place that I’ve wanted to visit for as long as I can remember, I never thought I would actually be living here for a year. It all feels very surreal.

I was lucky enough to have my parents here with me for the first two weeks of being here. During those first two weeks we familiarized ourselves with the city, and went to the zoo. It wasn’t all easy though. On the first night, my parents and I went grocery shopping at IGA. We told the cab driver “IGA please!” and off we went. When it was time to come home I sent for a cab to pick us up. Twenty minutes had gone by and no cab, so I called again. This happened three times before I realized that I was sending the cab to the IGA in Crawley while we were actually at the IGA in Nedlands. We had no idea we were in another suburb. At the moment, it wasn’t funny, we were waiting for a cab for about an hour. But now, we look back at it and laugh at ourselves.

When I was filling out my residential college application, UniHall was my top choice. I loved the look of the new buildings, the proximity to campus and since it’s a pretty big college, I was looking forward to the different people I would meet. I was delighted when I found out I’d been accepted and got a studio room. Since this is the second dorm room I’ve had in the past few years, the transition was easy. This room is much nicer than my dorm room in undergrad though. More space, and more independent living. Being at UniHall made the move to Australia easier. I feel comfortable and I feel safe. Although I miss my friends and family back home, I’ve made some great friends here so far.
