By the time you’re reading this, thousands of UWA students dressed to the nines, will have already raised a significant amount of money for charity by selling the annual PROSH issue. With the first students hitting the streets around 6.30am, the people of Perth instantly know it’s PROSH day in what really is a Western Australian institution.

Student Guild President Maddie Mulholland says love it or hate it, the event is firmly part of the Perth identity.

“PROSH is one of the UWA Student Guild’s oldest traditions and we’re really proud of it. I believe it’s one of the largest single-day charity events in the southern hemisphere. Over two million dollars has been raised for hundreds of different WA charities in its 85 year history,” she said.

“We’re excited to be celebrating this milestone and to mark the occasion we’ve set a more ambitious target than last year and increased the number of charities we’ll give to.”

The production of PROSH is managed by two Directors and an Editor says Engineering student and Director, Matt Clark-Massera.

“This year we aim to sell 80,000 papers, collect over $100,000 and give to five wonderful charities,” he said.

Charities selected for 2016 are Bicycles of Humanity, Food Bank, Tiny Spark WA, Star Kick and Headspace.

“The emphasis is often on charities that are less well known and particularly those that are youth-run or youth-focused. The vast majority have a WA focus and we aim to select a variety of causes each year,” Matt said.

So while campus will be quieter this morning never fear there will be more costume-clad students around than in previous years, just waiting for your donation.

“We’ve heard that more staff want to buy a paper during the day and feel part of the event, rather than pick one up at a later stage. We definitely want more staff involved so keep a look out for students, or head to the Guild Student Centre or your faculty office and you’ll find papers there,” he said.

Maddie says the final word needs to go to the students who have given up their time to ensure today is a success.

“I need to give a shout out to the students who have spent the last couple of months putting the PROSH issue together. It includes a few throw backs from previous issues and I think people are really going to enjoy reading it. Happy PROSH Day!”
