Students enrolled in Political Science course Australian Politics have been spending the semester schooling up on how our political system works. The course covers a lot of material in 13 weeks however a series of guest lectures is bringing the subject matter to life the way no textbook can.

“Throughout the course, MPs, senators, shadow ministers, and ministers from across the political divide are speaking to the students about life as politicians," says tutor, Ash Jones.

“These lectures provide a first-hand glimpse into the real world of Australian politics which I’m sure gives students a better understanding of the practical realities of governing and campaigning.”

Federal Minister of Finance Mathias Cormann, Federal Liberal Party MP Andrew Hastie, and WA Labour State Secretary Patrick Gorman have attended lectures in the first half of the semester. WA Shadow Treasurer Ben Wyatt, Greens deputy leader Scott Ludlam and Federal Minister of Social Services Christian Porter will provide their insights in the second half.

Second year student Jack Barlow says these types of innovative teaching initiatives make university more interesting and enjoyable.

“Hearing directly from high profile politicians is definitely useful because it fits in so well with the purpose and content of the course. I’m really interested in finance and economics so the Minister of Finances’ talk has been a highlight for me so far,” Jack says.

“I’m also looking forward to Scott Ludlam speak in May. I may not always agree with what he’s saying but it’s interesting to hear his ideas and his theatrical presence makes for an entertaining talk!”

“That’s the other great thing about this series of lectures – it’s balanced across the political spectrum. We don’t just hear from one side, but from many. I wouldn’t want all the lectures to be from the side that I support, it’s good to hear other viewpoints that challenge my own thinking.”
