The UWA Choral Society, together with four prominent guest soloists (Katja Webb, Ileana Rinaldi, Perry Joyce and Andrew Foote) and a full 38 piece orchestra conducted by Christopher van Tuinen, perform Dvorak’s haunting oratorio, Stabat Mater .

Written in 1877, this deeply moving piece is Dvorak’s first work on a religious theme and is based on the 13th century Latin poem that describes Mary’s heartache standing before the Cross. A grief-stricken Dvorak wrote his Stabat Mater after suffering the loss of three of his children in rapid and tragic succession.  A profound, masterful setting of the expression of loss and sorrow, Dvorak's work conveys his sense of deepest emptiness, and documents his personal inner struggle and hard-won hope regained through devotional music.

“Dvorak pulls out the stops with an impressive Handelian fugue and glorious Beethovenian finish. He transcends grief with goose bumps and glory, a glimpse at a better world.” LA Times 2014
