The UWA Torpedoes captured their maiden National Water Polo League crown on the weekend when they beat the Victorian Seals in a dramatic penalty shootout.

The National League comprises twelve teams from Perth, Fremantle, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Newcastle and Brisbane and provides the level of competition below international and Olympic representation.

After dominating early in their semi-final against Sydney University Lions and holding on for a 9 - 8 win, the Torpedoes were fired up for a tight final game, especially after watching the other semi-final go down to the wire with a penalty shootout.

The Seals led throughout the match but the Torpedos didn’t let them get too far ahead trailing by just one goal through the entire game. In a thrilling finish, the Torpedos took the lead, just for the Seals to equalise for an 8-8 score line in the dying seconds.

Torpedos captain and goalie Luke Quinlivan had a big role to play in the match and gave his side an early upper hand in the shootout by shutting down a goal attempt and they went on to win it 13-11.

George Ford, UWA student and Rio Olympic squad member was stoked to be part of the Torpedoes team to win the title.

“The team were runners-up in 1996 and 2013, and it’s a great feeling to go one better this year.  The win is reconition of a lot of hard work and I couldn’t be more proud of the team,” says Ford.
