UWA student athlete Kate Fitzsimons will be departing this week to compete for Australia in her second World University Cross Country Championship, held this year in Cassino, Italy.This one day event to be held on Saturday 12 March, will see approximately 150 athletes from more than 20 countries compete in the women’s 6km and men’s 12km course around the campus of the Università degli Studi di Cassino e del Lazio Meridionale (Public University of Cassino).

Kate was also selected to compete in the 2014 Championship event held in Entebbe, Uganda where the Australia’s women’s team placed 7th overall and Kate finished in 22nd place in 22 minutes, 47 seconds, in tough, hot and humid conditions. Kate is hoping to find her feet early in the race and improve on her past performance in what is forecast to be much milder conditions for all runners.

The Australian team selected for this year’s event include 3 in the men’s team, and 5 in the women’s team from universities including The University of Sydney, The University of NSW and Deakin University, as well as our own Kate. Wishing Kate and the Australian team best of luck for thie Championship.
