Every 5 years, the pond located in the Japanese studies courtyard (Social Sciences) undergoes an enhancement program to improve the overall environment of the water quality and surroundings for the animal habitat residing in the pond.

This delicate project was recently undertaken by Campus Management which required careful planning and management to ensure the fish were transferred to another location in accordance with animal ethics guidelines and requirements.

The works involved draining the pond, cleaning out the build-up of sediment and debris from the bottom, pressure cleaning the surface area and renewing the pond waterproof membrane.

The restoration was successful, with the overall health of the pond having been improved and the animal and plant life returned safely to their new environment.

Works are also currently in process to clean and refurbish the moat in front of the Reid Library, with the same careful planning.
