There are plenty of famous rivalries - David vs Goliath, Dockers vs Eagles, even coyote vs roadrunner, however, at UWA in the 60’s and early 70’s it seems the biggest rivalry on campus came down to lawyers vs engineers.

At least, that’s what we gather from one law school alumnus who popped into the Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Student Office recently to return some ill-gotten treasures.

The fellow, who wanted to remain anonymous, had recently rediscovered several Faculty of Engineering Goyder Cup pennants from 1965, 1970 and 1971 while cleaning his house; pennants he had stolen from engineering as a lark while studying law at UWA. He laughingly recounted the rivalry that led to his decision to steal the flags, but said his conscience had finally gotten the better of him, leading him to return them.

According to Laura Burton (pictured), Faculty Development Officer (ECM) in Development and Alumni Relations, the rivalry is still a popular topic among our alumni. “I first heard about the rivalry last May when we held a 50 year engineering reunion. Our alumni were keen to reminisce and there were many stories told over the course of the night of the shenanigans that took place. I thought the attendees would get a kick out of this story so I sent them an email with a photo of the pennants to show they are back with their rightful owner,” she said.

You will be pleased to know the treasured goods have now found their way back to UWA Sports for safe keeping.
