Staff, students and graduates from The University of Western Australia are celebrating their role in the design of Elizabeth Quay, supporting lead architect Ashton Raggatt McDougall (ARM).

Located in Perth on the Swan River, the Elizabeth Quay development will reconnect Perth city with the Swan River to create a dynamic new entertainment and leisure precinct, set around a stunning inlet.

UWA Associate Professor and Landscape Architect Julian Bolleter, was part of the ARM design team, which included UWA staff and associates Howard Raggatt, Andrew Lilleyman, Richard Weller, Kukame McKenzie, Jenny Watson and Julia Robinson who played a key role in the design of the development.

Professor Bolleter said the project had been highly rewarding and the opening was a great moment for Perth’s history.

“Staff, students and graduates from the UWA School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture worked as part of the design team, throughout the various stages of the design development,” Professor Bolleter said.

“There were numerous options for the design and I think the resulting facility looks magnificent and will transform the relationship between the city and its river .”

Professor Bolleter said the Perth foreshore was unique because over the years there had been hundreds of concepts for its development but since settlement not a lot had been built on the foreshore.

Professor Bolleter authored a book, Take me to the river: Alternative stories of Perth's foreshore , which features the forgotten schemes for the waterfront over the years, and the concepts were displayed earlier this month at the Museum of Perth.

A series of events will be held for the opening of Elizabeth Quay as part of the Perth International Arts Festival, which UWA has supported over the years and originally founded in 1953.
