The University of Western Australia congratulates the outstanding members of its community for being recognised in this year’s Australia Day honours.

UWA alumni, Dr Catherine Keenan, was named Australia’s Local Hero for her work in co-founding a not-for-profit creative writing centre, the Sydney Story factory, which helps disadvantaged young people improve their written and oral communication skills.

She was one of 813 Australians across the country recognised on the Australia day 2016 Honour List.

The sister of Federal Justice Minister Michael Keenan, Dr Keenan was born in Perth and completed a Bachelor of English at UWA before earning her doctorate in English Literature from Oxford University.

Researcher at UWA’s Centre for Respiratory Health, Dr Susan Jenkins, was awarded a Medal (OAM) in the General Division for service to medicine, particularly in the field of pulmonary rehabilitation. Dr Jenkins and her colleague Nola Cecins (OAM) are responsible for providing the pulmonary rehabilitation service in the Physiotherapy Department at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

Executive Officer at the Respiratory Health Institute, Cameron Agnew said Dr Jenkins is well known for her work in physiotherapy and respiratory diseases.

“This is fantastic recognition for the contribution Sue has made in field and is a reflection of the high standing she has both in the industry and among her peers,” Mr Agnew said.

UWA would also like to congratulate its other alumni who received much deserved honours on Australia Day.

Graduates Brian Easton (BA 1968) and Professor Peter Sly (DSc 2003) were among them, both appointed an Officer (AO) in the General Division for their services to conservation and the environment and medical research and education.
