As staff across the University get ready to take a well-earned break, please spare a thought for our Admissions team who will be working throughout the shutdown period.

Part of the Community & Engagement portfolio, Admissions brings together all aspects of the admissions process for both domestic and international, Undergraduate and Postgraduate students. The team is responsible for the core assessment of applications, and the offer conversion process and the continuous improvement and development of admissions processes.

“This is our busiest time of year, with the TISC results coming out on 30 December,” said Associate Director Zoe Morrison, who only joined the University six weeks ago at the beginning of November.

“So, it’s all hands on deck right now,” she said.

During the break, the Admissions team will be busy processing TISC applications when the year 12 school leavers results are released on 30th December, as well as continuing to process postgraduate and international applications and sending out offers.

“Across the campus it’ll be very quiet,” said Rick Ackerman, manager of Admissions’ Student Assessment team. “But in here the phones will be ringing and emails dinging.”

Admissions is quite large, with 28 staff overall. Almost everyone will be working at least one week during the break.

“And all of us will be back on 4 Jan,” said Rick.

But a reduced Christmas break is part and parcel of working in Admissions.

“We do this every year and the team knows the drill,” said Rick. “We’re all very busy, but we get the job done.”

Rick said the team is motivated by a deadline that cannot move – the start of Semester 1, 2016.

“Every application has to be processed, every offer needs to be made,” he said. “But we’ll get there. We always do.”

The structure of Admissions has recently changed following the Functional Review process, and includes:

  • Admissions Development team managed by Andrew Huck. This team is responsible for the Continuous Improvement and development of the Admissions processes.
  • Assessment team managed by Rick Ackerman. Responsible for the assessment and subsequent offer or rejection of all applications include Domestic, International, Undergraduate and Postgraduate.
  • Offer Conversion team managed by John Tan. This is a newly developed team who are tasked with improving the conversion of offers into enrolments for the university, linking in with faculties and departments throughout the University.
