The Reid Library refurbishment program commences Thursday 17 December with details of activities listed below

  • Thursday 17 December - site fencing installation begins
  • Friday 18 December - soft strip of second floor
  • Monday 28 December - asbestos removal works begin
  • Tuesday 5 January - strip out of the ground floor

The Reid Library site establishment fencing will be erected around the building commencing Thursday 17 December.

The site strip out of the second floor will commence Friday 18 December, with the ground floor of the building scheduled to commence on Tuesday 5 January 2016.

There will be some noise and minimal dust associated with these works.

Work to remove identified asbestos containing materials, is scheduled to commence on Monday 28 December. The removal will be undertaken by licensed asbestos removalists under the required controlled conditions as per the codes of practice. A third party licensed asbestos assessor will also be overseeing the removal activities and ensuring it is being undertaken to the required standards and safely. The area identified will be secured and access restricted to authorised persons only.

The asbestos removal is taking place in the south-west stairwell (on all floors) and other isolated areas within the construction zone. The asbestos material is in bonded form and the removal will not involve the circulation of dust in the air handling system or to other occupied areas. The area will be completely sealed off, with entry and exit for contractors only through the one door.

For reassurance, an air unit will be set up for monitoring the quality of the air during the works. An exclusion zone will also be established to secure off the area and to ensure persons are not impacted by the work.

Upon completion of the works, clearance monitoring will be undertaken and when successful clearance has been confirmed, the areas will be approved for reoccupation.

The safety of our staff, students and visitors is paramount and the University has procedures in place, and qualified contractors, to carry out work safely.  Please note:

  • The University of Western Australia’s work involving the removal of asbestos material will comply with the WA Occupational Safety and Health Regulations (1996) and the Code of Practice for the Safe Removal of Asbestos 2nd Edition [NOHSC:2002(2005)].
  • The University of Western Australia has asbestos management policies and practices in place to ensure the health and safety of all building users across campus.
  • Areas of the Reid Library Building will be secured and access will not be permitted to staff, students and visitors during the works.
  • Air monitoring will be undertaken throughout the duration of the project by a third party. In addition, removal will be overseen by a licensed asbestos assessor in consultation with the Project Manager and Safety Officer assigned to this project.
