The University of Western Australia’s vision for a new world-leading engineering zone is moving closer to reality, with approval for the first $80 million of an estimated $600 million works to build an engineering hub, known as EZONE UWA.

Initial works will commence in December 2015 with construction of a new hub building to begin in early 2018.  The focus of these works is a step change in the quality of teaching and learning spaces. The Architect HASSELL has been appointed to undertake master planning (scheduled December 2015) and schematic design (scheduled April 2016).

Enabled by the early and strong support of industry, including major industry partners BHP Billiton and Woodside Energy, the investment into EZONE UWA is planned to be made over the next twenty years, an essential part of the vision to make the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics one of the world’s top 100 engineering institutions.

“The commencement of EZONE UWA represents a major step change in the way we deliver engineering, computing and mathematics education, research and industry engagement.  It will drive the alignment of people, capability and environment which will enable the development of multidisciplinary solutions to the challenges and opportunities of the next decades,” said Professor John Dell, Dean of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics.

“It is precisely the right kind of counter-cyclical investment we need to make today. We are absolutely delighted with the support we have received from our major industry partners, BHP Billiton and Woodside Energy, who remain long term and valuable partners of ours,” Professor Dell said.

“EZONE UWA is our largest ever infrastructure investment and will ensure the University continues to retain and recruit world class researchers and teachers across the engineering, computing and mathematics disciplines. It will develop the best possible learning environment for our students and remains a go-to destination for industry, government and global research partners.”
