A new eLearning service offered by UWA Business School graduates is creating a richer learning experience for university students.

Nick Ainsworth and Anthony Maher, who recently completed their Commerce studies at UWA, have launched RV Studio. The Perth-based firm builds digital business products and eLearning solutions.

RV Studio’s latest project is an eLearning service that takes current learning material and transforms them into an animation - complete with audio – to create a more immersive learning experience.

The eLearning service is being developed with Curtin University, and from next year will be used to deliver an online numeracy program.

The eLearning service, says Nick, was influenced by his own experiences as both a university student and tutor.

“In my time at UWA I was able to experience lecture styles from a range of lecturers and across three separate universities (including exchanges),” Nick said.

During this time, Nick found that movement was an important part of slide show presentations – as was an engaging voice narration.

“The idea [of our eLearning platform] is that the student has the written material (as in a lecture), then they receive the animation to attract attention or demonstrate a point (similar to where a lecturer points to an object in a lecture), and then the system plays the audio narration (lecturer's voice) which is timed to line up exactly with the animation,” Nick explained.

“In essence, we're recreating the lecture engagement experience... or trying to! In some senses, I believe it can be better because we're capable of animating things like economics graphs to help a student see what is moving and changing.”

Next year, Nick and his team hope to expand their eLearning platform for use at other universities and high schools, as well as adding activities, tests and other features.
