Congratulations to the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics (ECM), who were overall winners in an impressive field of champions in this year’s Staff Sports Day, held on Friday 6 November 2015. More than 450 staff and PHD students were undeterred by a dismal weather forecast, turning out for the eighth annual event hosted by ECM, UWA Sports and University Club.

The field was awash with team colours from across the faculties and business units, participating in a range of traditional sports from volleyball to bocce and the ever-popular Treasure Hunt.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Community and Engagement) Professor Kent Anderson welcomed staff on the day saying that it was an opportunity for everyone to interact in a positive way while getting active and promoting health and wellbeing.

“Today is an opportunity to take some time out of the office, to enjoy the day and hopefully make some new friends,” said Professor Anderson.

Each year staff from UWA Sports coordinate the traditional sports competitions and provide the equipment, umpires/official and staff who assist on the day. In the spirit of shared responsibility, organisation of the day is rotated between faculties and departments. The Chief Operating Office has been nominated as the official organisers of next year’s event and Gaye McMath received the torch from Deputy Dean Professor Yinong Liu to signify this handover.

Congratulations to this year’s winners who shared in more than $1,300 in prizes:

  • Great Treasure Hunt - Business School
  • VC Dash Women - Dr Laila Simpson (Strategy & Planning)
  • VC Dash Men - Darren Clarke (Science – PHD Student)
  • Dean’s Dash - DVC Community and Engagement
  • Best Dressed - DVC Research
  • Most represented - DVC Education
  • Bocce - DVC Community and Engagement
  • Soccer & Table Tennis - Faculty of Science
  • Volleyball - Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
  • Tug of War - DVC Research & Chief Operating Office
  • Fly (Women) - Angel Hayward (School of Indigenous Studies, Vice Chancellery)
  • Fly (Men) - Simon Thuijs (Student Services)

In closing, Kent congratulated all participants on the spirit displayed and their willingness to participate in the activities. He encouraged everyone to rally their colleagues in the lead up to next year’s event to make it a record number of participants in 2016.

Special thanks to the organising committee, area coordinators and the sponsors; UniBank, UWA Social Club, Uni Print and the University Club. Donations were made to The Australian Red Cross as the event’s nominated charity.
