UWA student athletes, club and team members and volunteers filled the Granite Room at Perth Arena on Thursday 29 October for the 2015 UWA Sports Awards, honouring the sporting achievements from all aspects of sport at the University. From on campus competitions such as Inter-College and Inter-Faculty sport, through to Australian University Games, World University Games and UWA community sporting club honours, the huge range of sporting talent and future of sport was on display.

The most anticipated award of the evening is always the Sports Star of the Year, awarded to the best performing UWA student athlete, and was presented to science student and swimmer, Holly Barratt for her achievements at the 2015 Summer Universiade (Gwangju, Korea), winning gold and two bronze, as well as achieving many personal bests in the pool throughout the year. Holly was also inducted into the Australian University Sport Honour Roll as a champion during the night’s proceedings, an honour she was not expecting but proud to receive.

Other notable award winners from the evening was the UWA Judo Club, who took home the Champion Club award, and fencing coach Nilzo “Tuko” Maia Caetano Jnr who was award Coach of the Year. Full and Half Blues honours were presented to more than 21 students from more than 12 different sports including taekwondo, futsal, squash and athletics. The Blues awards have a long history and tradition, recognised around the world and are the highest tribute a University can bestow on outstanding student athletes, with notable Blues recipients such as Bob Hawke, Sir Rod Eddington, John Inverarity and Felicity Sheedy-Ryan.

The University of Western Australia was awarded the Tertiary Sports Western Australia (inter-university sport) Overall Champion University for the 16th consecutive year after defeating the second placed WA university by 28 points, and was also presented with the Western Spirit award for sportsmanship on and off the field.

It wasn’t all award presentations and shiny trophies, guest speaker Michelle Cowan kept the crowd engaged with her life as a female AFL coach and her 5 P’s to pursue your life goals, sharing with the crowd some great personal stories and dropping a few names.

Many other achievements and honours were presented throughout the night, all winners are listed below.
