The University of Western Australia (UWA) will be ready to take on the nation’s top universities in 2016 when the Australian University Games (UniGames) will embark on Perth, after winning the John White Spirit of the Games Award at this year’s UniGames held on the Gold Coast last week.

The Spirit of the Games Trophy was awarded to UWA for outstanding sportsmanship, fair play and respect for self and others after nominations from competition managers, officials and other university team managers.

Overall, UWA placed 5th after winning four pennants (team gold medals) and numerous team and  individual medals in the 5 day long multi-sport event that attracted more than 8,000 student competitors from over 42 tertiary institutions nationwide. 19 UWA student athletes were honoured with Green and Gold (best and fairest) medals across 10 sports including four representatives from the gold medal winning men’s Australian Rules Football team. Sydney University again took out the top honours and Overall Champion Trophy with 15 pennants.

Pennants were won by UWA in the following team sports; open sailing, men’s judo, men’s Australian Rules Football and women’s golf. The women’s futsal team, along with men’s and women’s squash won bronze medals. Individual gold went to Sean West in men’s U90kg judo who also took out the Champion of Champions title, while silver was won by team members Myung Shin Kang in the U81kg division, and Peter Morcom in the U66kg category. Zak Leonhard won gold in the men’s individual sabre (fencing), and bronze was won in the pool in the men’s 50m freestyle by Patrick Hoey.
