The first UWA Self eHealth Challenge has been a big success.

Kicking off in late May, the Challenge provided guidance and incentives to help participants achieve their specific health goals, including meeting the recommended 10,000 steps of physical activity each day. Armed with Fitbit activity trackers and free passes to the pool and gym on campus, 340 staff got moving - scheduling walking meetings, holding lunchtime walks and making more time for activity outside of work.

During the four month journey, together they walked, ran, swam, and cycled a total of 289,000 kilometres (the equivalent of 7 times around the earth!). Participants also lost weight, lowered their cholesterol levels and most importantly, cemented an active lifestyle.

A variety of prizes were given out along the way for those who averaged at least 10,000 steps, and for those who participated in mini-challenges and photo competitions designed to keep motivation levels high.

Chief Executive Officer Gaye McMath congratulated all involved at the wrap-up morning tea on September 30, and acknowledged our winners with some healthy prizes including hampers full of fresh produce from the Subiaco Farmers’ Market and passes to the UWA Recreation & Fitness Centre:

  • Behnaz Abdollahzadeh (most active individual award)
  • Frank Morgan (most improved individual award)
  • The Hard Walkers (most active team award): Behnaz Abdollahzadeh, Kai Koh, Muhammad Hossain Usha Mani, Yineng Teng, and Zhou Tao.
