UniHallers past and present came together for a night of delicious food and mesmerising entertainment to celebrate the unique community at University Hall (UniHall) with the International Night Greek Odyssey .

One of the highlights of the UniHall experience and community is the cultural diversity amongst students, which continues to be central to the Hall’s identity. International night is a long held tradition at UniHall with decades of students from around the globe sharing their traditional backgrounds and stories.

On Tuesday 8th September UniHallers and distinguished guests Matt Budge, Chair of University Hall Council; Chris Massey, Director of UWA Student Residences; Milly Ingate, Associate Director International Relationships (Academic Partnerships and Pathways); Keith Conley, Principal University Hall; Janet Linn, Deputy Principal University Hall; Charles Johnson, Chair of the Alumni Committee; and Lorna Johnson, University Hall alumnus saw the Dining Hall transform into a Greek Odyssey.

Guests entered the night through a beautiful white archway into a room filled with candles, vine leaves and a stage with the historical Acropolis of Athens. All UniHallers were dressed to impress with a mix of evening dresses, suit and ties and traditional costumes such as the saree , evzones , lederhosen and more!

The evening began with the highly anticipated Parade of Nations where students proudly carry their country’s flag onto the stage and around the room. It is incredible to see the evening grow from 20 flag bearers at the 2012 Parade of Nations to over 40 at this year’s event –a new Hall record!

UniHall Deputy Principal Janet Linn said the large number of residents who volunteered to represent their home nation by proudly bearing their flag was a fantastic contribution to the night.

“UniHallers’ response to the Parade of Nations was so joyous and appreciative. It reminds us all of what a great community we live in at the Hall,” says Ms Linn.

Guests indulged in a mezze-style dinner shared at their table of friends. Some of the menu items freshly prepared by University Club included spanakopita, lamb shanks, Greek salad, chicken souvlaki, skordalia, finishing with mini loukoumades and honey cake.

Ms Ingate said the international dinner was a wonderful event and a terrific celebration of UWA international students and the valuable contribution they make to the UWA community.

“I was honoured to be part of the celebration,” she says.

This year alone, UniHall is home to students from 47 different countries. The Hall will continue to uphold this valuable international night tradition to celebrate and share personal stories and lifestyles from around the globe.
