Day two of competition at the Australian University Games (UniGames) on the Gold Coast, saw all sports get underway with a mixed bag of result for Team UWA.

The UWA open sailing team started their campaign for 6th straight gold today, coming away with 4 wins and 2 losses.

Following on from a successful Junior Nationals competition last weekend, UWA fencers Abigail Lee and Tori Leonhard opened their UniGames campaign today at Varsity Lakes. Both Abigail and Tori were members of the team that took out the gold medal at Nationals last weekend in the women’s sabre teams, and they are looking forward to the same placement of competition at UniGames. In the foil competition today Abigail made it to the quarter finals but lost in the bronze medal bout to Australian National University.

The swimming also commenced today at the 2018 Commonwealth Games venue in Southport, with the whole team turning out to support team captain Morgan Harrison in her three event heats. The men’s 4x100 medley relay had all four of our male competitors in the pool for the timed final. Wednesday will be a big day of competition with all team members racing in events.

Helping lead the charge for the men’s basketball was coach Luke Wilson, imparting some words pre-match, the game plan was to stop the opposition’s transitions, defend perimeter shooters and make use of the team’s height advantage. And what a fight the boys put up, holding their ground until the final quarter but unfortunately University of Technology Sydney (UTS) were too strong sealing the deal with a result of 54-45.

In hockey , UWA men’s showed another commanding performance, having regained their early tournament favourite tag after a slight hiccup in game 1. A versatile and highly skilled team thrashed Curtin University 5-1 in their early game today.

Our women’s hockey team played a steady brand of hockey to defeat the University of New South Wales (UNSW) 2-0. A good work effort across the field ensured that the result was never in doubt. Nil all draw against University of Newcastle in the women's final match of the day.

Another very solid performance from the lawn bowls boys against La Trobe University. One doubles win, a doubles loss and a crushing 18-1 victory by captain Toby Butler in the singles to cap off another great team performance. The team also won their second match of the day against International College of Management Sydney (ICMS).

Our men’s Aussie Rules team had another dominant performance against University of Sydney, 77 to 15. The guys backed it up later in the day beating Australian Catholic University 55 to 15.

In futsal , the men’s team went one better today winning both their games, 6-1 against Edith Cowan University (ECU) and 2-1 against UNSW. The girl’s team however were no match against Griffith University, going down 5-1. They did, however, manage to secure a big win in their second game against UNSW 10-1.

Today was only day 2 of competition, with finals just on the horizon, stay tuned for more updates and the latest information. Check out all the results on the Australian University Sport website results page.
