Day four of competition means one thing, it's semis and finals time! UWA is well represented in most sports' quarter and semi-finals, which will hopefully lead to more team gold medals and pennants.

The fourth day of competition saw UWA bring in another team gold medal, this time in sailing . The team outclassed all competition, winning every race of the final day including against University of Technology Sydney (UTS) in the semis, and University of Sydney in the gold medal match. The gold medal match was decided in a first to three wins scenario. UWA took a clean sweep of both the semis against UTS and University of Sydney in the final to make it gold for six years in a row, since sailing’s inception into the games in 2010.

UWA Aussie Rules men were up against Monash University and, after a relatively slow start, managed to pull it together in the second half, winning by 3 goals to secure a berth in the gold medal final.

In the men’s hockey , UWA took on University of Queensland (UQ) twice, first in the final pool match and then in the semi-final. In the first match of the day, UQ came out of the blocks with all guns blazing and stunned the hockey guys with an early goal. They fought back well, and had numerous opportunities but couldn’t get on to the back of the net with the final score 1-0. It was an excellent warm up for the semi later in the day, where UQ snuck in and managed to defeat UWA 5-4 in extra time (golden goal). UWA produced some outstanding passages of play and deserved to win, however in extra time UWA had four terrific opportunities to score but were thwarted by excellent goal keeping, meaning they will be fighting it out for bronze against Melbourne University.

Magnificent conditions at Sanctuary Cove for the golf competition. With an 8:00am shotgun start everybody was ready for a big day. The course was magnificent and saw Andrew Kelly finish with on 83, Michael Riddle on 85 and Christine Manungas on 89. Going into the final day the men’s team are currently in 5th place and the girls are in the gold medal position.

In the lawn bowls competition semi-final, UWA played a very formidable Monash University. Again, strategy played a big part and kept the team in the hunt. Unfortunately, the class of Monash was too much in the end, going down 2-1 in a great fighting performance.

Both the men’s and women’s futsal teams came up against strong opposition in their semi-finals with men’s losing 5-3 against University of Canberra and the girls going down to University of Technology Sydney 2-1, with both teams playing for bronze in tomorrow’s final matches.

Also making it into the bronze medal match are men's squash. Having fought hard over the week, they lost their semi-final against the undefeated Monash University. Tomorrow's play off against Adelaide University will be a tough battle. Women's squash also lost their semi-final against Monash and will play off against Melbourne University for the bronze.

We would like to wish the best of luck to all UWA teams playing in tomorrow’s finals or placing competitions. You have shown great team spirit and pride throughout the week, and we hope you continue to support and cheer on your fellow UWA student teams.
