The third day of competition at the Australian University Games saw Zak Leonhard win the gold medal in the men’s individual sabre (fencing) competition, and Patrick Hoey bring home bronze in the fiercely competitive men’s 50m freestyle (swimming) race.

The UWA men’s squash team won their quarter final after a thrilling match against University of Sydney. After a 2-2 draw the UWA side took the contest 16-12 on a count back.

The UWA women’s touch football team dominated their game against fellow West Australian Edith Cowan University (ECU), with a commanding 7-0 victory.

The UWA men’s athletics 4x100m relay team progressed to the final with an impressive outing in their semi-finals. News wasn’t so good for Sophie Watts and Evan Boon, who both put up spirited efforts against a strong field in their 200m semi-finals.

UWA men’s hockey team took out their early morning fixture against Sydney University in a fast, flowing and entertaining game. While not performing to their usual high standards and missing numerous simple opportunities, the team were able to open up a substantial lead, eventually winning 7-0. It’s safe to say the boys will need to sharpen up leading into tougher fixtures to come in the semi-finals.

The UWA women’s hockey team came up against a strong, well organised and highly motivated Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) outfit. After taking a 1-0 lead into the half time break, UWA had to hold on for the draw after a strong final quarter by the RMIT girls. The final result of a 1-1 draw will ensure the UWA girls a well-deserved quarter final berth.

The UWA lawn bowls team won a tight match against Federation University 2-1. With both teams demonstrating excellent control and strategy, UWA eventually used superior team work to win both doubles matches and secured the win against strong opposition.

The final scores did not reflect the standard of play on show this morning at the Albert Park Junior Tennis Club (Burleigh Heads). The UWA men’s tennis team came up against the hard hitting and highly fancied Monash line-up, eventually losing all 5 matches. Spirited displays by all team members ensured no Monash player had an easy path to victory. The team will move forward into the playoffs looking to secure their division 1 status.

After a long battle on the courts, the UWA women’s tennis team won their fixture against Griffith University 3.5-1.5, with the final game being declared a draw due to time restrictions. Safe to say the team were happy with their day’s work and will move forward into the semi-finals.

The UWA men’s basketball team took on Monash in what turned out to be a nail biting game. The men displayed good energy and team cohesion to move into the fourth quarter with a 2 point lead. The Monash team raised their energy and accuracy in the final quarter to eventually secure the win, 40-29.

The UWA men’s Aussie rules football team had a day of two halves, losing a closely fought morning fixture against the extremely strong RMIT outfit, 34-27. The result put the side in an afternoon repechage against the tough Federation University for a place in tomorrow’s semi-finals. After the morning’s disappointment, the guys showed great character to bounce back with a hard fought victory in a low scoring match, 19-18.

Tomorrow sees most UWA teams compete in the semi-finals where the pace will be stepped up a notch and teams will be competing for sheep stations. Good luck goes out ot all UWA teams in the upcoming finals challenges.
