Team UWA has shown some impressive competitiveness over the past three days of the Australian University Games, taking quite a few medals in the martial arts including gold in the men’s judo team event, gold in one of the men’s judo 90kg division, and dual silver in the 60kg and the 81kg divisions.

UWA also brought home the Judo Champion of Champions award (the highest award in the judo competition) to the overall open men’s competition. In taekwondo , UWA won a Green and Gold medal for the Poomsae competition, and gold in the women’s over 73kg, and the men’s over 78kg sparring competition.

A great start by our golfers in very challenging conditions, with an eight o’clock start there was little time to warm up and get ready for the day’s play. The course proved to be a good test for our team, while captains Christine and Andrew led from the front with excellent scores that will hopefully set them up for a very fruitful week.

Lawn bowls saw the first game of the tournament against USQ which included a fabulous contest from the outset winning two doubles games and a singles match. Toby and Callum took their doubles match, but Oliver and Richard found the opposition a little tough. In the end, UWA lost 2-1 to USQ.

Our men’s hockey team showed a great performance against Melbourne University. Led by Matt Lim as the centre half/full back the UWA hockey boys were far too skilled for Melbourne with the final margin 4-0. When keeping up the performance in future games they should give the title a run for its money. UWA's women’s team came away with the win against USC, 2-1 in the six o’clock match up, showing they have much to prove in future matches.

Men’s baseball started their UniGames contest with a loss in their first game. They came back strong in their second game with a huge victory over UTS with a score of 7-0.

The women’s softball team went down in both games but displayed a team spirit that couldn't be matched by any other team.

Water polo's men's team lost their first game to Monash and drew their second to UNSW. The women's team defeated Monash 5-3 but lost their second match to Melbourne in a very close game. Words of encouragement were shouted from the sidelines by the men’s team in an effort to support their counterparts.

Women’s futsal started strong with a 6-1 win over Macquarie University but lost their second game 5-4 against University of Sunshine Coast. Men’s futsal had a 2-1 win against Monash University and a 2-4 loss against Canberra University.

Australian Rules Football women’s team lost a tight game to the highly fancied Monash side, 34-33. The men’s team opened their campaign with a big 15 goal (90 point difference) against host University Bond.

Mixed netball lost a close one against ECU 27 to 34.

The squash men’s team won against University of Technology Sydney 4-0 before losing to Latrobe University 1-3. The women’s team has a similar result over Melbourne with a 4-0 win and a 0-4 loss to Monash.

Team UWA men’s badminton had a 4-1 win against Australian University .

Congratulations to all UWA teams, we look forward to seeing your results over the coming days.
