More than 370 student athletes from the University of Western Australia (UWA) will be departing this weekend for the Australian University Games (UniGames) held on the Gold Coast in Queensland from Sunday 27 September through to Friday 2 October.

The Australian University Games are an annual multi-sport event, with more than 7,500 students from 42 universities nationwide converging on a host city to compete in a range of sports. Team UWA comprises of 38 teams (men’s, women’s and mixed) competing in 27 different sports including Taekwon-do, Swimming, Cycling, Rugby 7’s, Ultimate (Frisbee) just to name a few (full list of sports below).

Team UWA captains Claudia Berson (21) and Salvador (JJ) Jose (25) are excited to represent the University on the national sporting stage.

“The main thing we want Team UWA to take with them to UniGames this year is to play hard, respect each other, and to respect the sport, so that as a whole team, even though we play different sports we can support each other on and off the field,” JJ said at the Team Pep Rally prior to departing for UniGames.

The men’s Basketball and Beach Volleyball pairs and women’s Squash teams will be looking to defend their division 1 gold medals from Sydney in 2014, but extra pressure will be on the open Sailing team who has won the title for the last 5 years straight, since its inception into the games back in 2010. Other teams to look out for in 2015 are the men’s Australian Rules Football team who won on the Gold Coast back in 2013, but were edged out last year by Melbourne University 43 to 37. Both men’s and women’s hockey and water polo teams are also among the gold medal contenders at this year’s event.

Team UWA was farewelled on behalf of the University by Professor Alec Cameron, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education), at the Team Pep Rally on Thursday 17 September, who reminisced about his very own sporting experience representing Sydney University at the games which were back then hosted in Perth. Professor Cameron’s main message to the students was to unite as a team, to support, cheer, and look out for each other.

2016 will see the Australian University Games return to Perth for the first time since 2010.
