UWA student athletes Holly Barratt (swimming) and Lilian Hedges (water polo) have swum away from the 2015 Summer Universiade in Gwangju, Korea, with gold medals and helped the Australian Uniroos to their most successful University Games with a record 19 medals.
Holly Barratt, who is currently studying a Bachelor of Science, was Australia’s most successful athlete with gold in her pet event, the 50m backstroke, and bronze in both the 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle. After representing in the previous games in Kazan, Russia, Holly has been selected in the Australia A swim team and has been working to improve on her personal best times. Fellow UWA swimmer Nicholas Brown swam in the heats of the 4x200m freestyle, which assisted the team to reach the finals where they won silver. Nick made the finals of the 200m butterfly event where he finished in 6th place, and also the semi-finals in the 100m butterfly to finish in 11th place.
As the women’s water polo goalkeeper, Lilian starred in the nail biting gold medal final winning in a penalty shootout against Canada 6-3 to claim their first ever University Games title. Lilian showed off her quick skills to save all three of Canada’s penalty attempts, while the Aussies hit the back of the net each time. UWA students Lachlan Pethick (Commerce) and Andrew Ford (Engineering) didn’t have the same winning edge in the men’s team, going down to Serbia in the quarter-finals after leading in the first half to finish the competition in 7th place.
