There will be a number of activities occurring within the Mathematics Building (223) to remove identified asbestos containing materials.

An air unit will be set up for monitoring the quality of the air during the works. An exclusion zone will also be established to secure off the area and to ensure persons are not impacted by the work.

While the work is taking place, access will not be permitted in rooms:

  • 226, 227, 229, 280, 278, 224 and 224A

Removal of asbestos containing material will be undertaken by licensed asbestos removalists under the required controlled conditions as per the codes of practice. The area identified will be secured and access restricted to authorised persons.

Upon completion of the works, clearance monitoring will be undertaken and when successful clearance has been confirmed, the areas will be approved for reoccupation. This is estimated to be at approximately 7am on Sunday 12 July.

The safety of our staff, students and visitors is paramount and the University has procedures in place, and qualified contractors, to carry out work safely.  Please note:

  • The University of Western Australia’s work involving the removal of asbestos material will comply with the WA Occupational Safety and Health Regulations (1996) and the Code of Practice for the Safe Removal of Asbestos 2nd Edition [NOHSC:2002(2005)].
  • The University of Western Australia has asbestos management policies and practices in place to ensure the health and safety of all building users across campus.
  • Areas of the Mathematics Building will be secured and access will not be permitted to staff, students and visitors during the works.
  • Air monitoring will be undertaken throughout the duration of the project. In addition, removal will be overseen by a licensed asbestos assessor in consultation with the Project Manager and Safety Officer assigned to this project.
  • WorkSafe has been advised of this work, as per industry requirements.

This work has been scheduled during the mid-semester break to minimise disruption as much as possible.
