A team of 12 engineering student ambassadors from The University of Western Australia’s Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics flew to Broome to take part in the Kimberley Cup, an annual school sporting carnival coordinated by Broome Senior High School.

Led by a team of education specialists from Aspire UWA and the School of Indigenous Studies and assisted by current UWA Indigenous students from the Kimberley region, the engineering students helped with sporting activities and ran hands-on engineering activities designed to get high school students excited about higher education and careers in engineering and science.

Professor John Dell, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics said the trip helped build lasting relationships and support those in remote communities.

“The University of Western Australia is committed to giving back to the community and this is a fantastic opportunity for the Faculty to deliver an initiative that supports schools and students in the Kimberley,” Professor Dell said.

“We also encourage our students to play a part in ‘giving back’. Not only are they adding value in a remote area, but they are also gaining a rewarding experience and insight into working with regional communities.”

When the UWA student ambassadors were asked why they wanted to visit the Broome community and make a difference, engineering student Jonathan Lee said: “I want to inspire students who might not be considering university as an option for their future and highlight to them the opportunities that UWA can provide.”

Josh Pimentel said: “I see it as a chance to give back to UWA, which has provided me with so many amazing opportunities and a world-class education.”

Amy Yu will be heading back to Broome for the second year in a row as a leader and said she was keen to take on a leadership role as well as act as a role model for the high school students.

In addition to the school activities, the group also used the trip to discover more about local Indigenous culture, spending time with Broome families whose members have studied at UWA and visiting Minyirr Park to learn about its cultural significance.

Following the successful “UWA Gives Back” event held in July 2013 as part of UWA’s Centenary celebrations, the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics has been partnering annually with Aspire UWA to engage schools, community, alumni and industry throughout the Kimberley region.
