Ten UWA students are among those who have been selected to represent Australia at the 28th Summer World University Games in Gwangju, Korea, from 3-14 July 2015.

The World University Games, also known as Universiade, is a sporting and cultural festival, which is staged every two years in both summer and winter. The Summer Universiade, only second to the Olympic Games with record figures of over 10,000 participants in 2013 from over 150 countries, is the only multi-sport event in the world that connects students at both academic and athletic levels. It is broadcasted by more than 100 TV channels.

The program of the 2015 Summer Universiade includes 13 compulsory sports including artistic gymnastics, athletics, basketball, diving, fencing, football, judo, rhythmic gymnastics, swimming, table tennis, tennis, volleyball and water polo, and eight optional sports; archery, badminton, baseball, golf, handball, rowing, shooting and taekwondo.

UWA representative team list:

  • Badminton:        Elliott Clutterbuck, Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Arts
  • Fencing:            Tori Leonhard, Bachelor of Science
    Zak Leonhard, Bachelor of Engineering
  • Judo:                Kai Png, Bachelor of Science

Sports not included in the Universiade are represented at mono-sport World University Championships in alternating, even-numbered years. The University of Western Australia, home to an emerging generation of young talented sailors, has secured the right to host the World University Sailing Championships in September 2016 in partnership with Australian University Sport.

September 2016 will be a busy month for Perth as it is also the host city for the annual Australian University Games.
