Western Australia’s first car sharing program has been launched at The University of Western Australia to help make more parking spaces available for students, staff and visitors.

The Student Car Share program will provide a bank of six rental cars on-site that students and staff can use. The fleet of Hyundai i20 cars will reside at St George’s College and will be booked through a user-friendly on-line registration and booking system.

It’s being promoted as a perfect alternative for students who don’t own a car or don’t have space for a car at College.

Fast, easy and convenient, the car share operates from a central pick-up/drop-off location for members. It is free to become a member until 30 June, and all reservations are made via an iPhone, tablet or desktop computer.

The Membership includes access to a fleet of vehicles 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with a rate starting at $6.00 per hour. That includes all costs, such as fuel, maintenance, cleaning, registration and insurance, and, for a fee, excesses can be eliminated. Bookings can be made with as little notice as 15 minutes or as much notice as a day or weeks ahead. Membership after 30 June will be $50 per year.

The Student Car Share program is ‘home grown’ and has been developed by Scarborough-based Sunset Rent a Car and St George’s College.

Major businesses Hyundai Australia and the John Hughes Group have also joined with St George’s College, St Thomas More College and University Hall to bring the program into being.
