Dear colleagues,
With final assessments and exams approaching, some students will inevitably be tempted to violate UWA expectations of academic conduct and to use inappropriate avenues for writing and study assistance. I have sent out a reminder to all undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students today (see excerpt below), but also wanted to alert you to increasing incidences of ghost writing services and assignment writing mills (such as GradEasy ) advertising their services to UWA students, and to ask you to be vigilant.
Practical steps that we can take together to try to combat these services include:
- Reminding students about the UWA policy on academic conduct and of appropriate resources and services for assignment and study assistance,
- Letting students know we are aware of ghost writing services, and that use of such services can result in failure and exclusion from the University,
- Removing non-UWA essay and assignment help advertisements posted around campus or on UWA social media channels,
- Reporting suspected incidences of academic misconduct to Faculty Conduct Advisers , and
- Referring students to appropriate sources of help, such as WRITE Smart Drop-ins , the STUDYSmarter Plagiarism Portal , UWA Library Guides and Academic conduct essentials .
The University takes the issue of academic misconduct very seriously and I urge you to be aware of the services, policies and penalties in place.
Yours Sincerely,
Grady Venville
Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education)
