Last Friday, 27 February, a celebration was held at Temasek Polytechnic marking the 10th year of the UWA Temasek exchange program. The celebration was attended by His Excellency the Australian High Commissioner for Singapore, Mr Philip Green, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at UWA, Professor Krishna Sen, Associate Dean (International) Nick Harney as well as Media and Communication lecturers and dignitaries and staff from Temasek Polytechnic.

Almost 400 students have now taken part in the exchange program which annually sees 20 top second-year Media and Communication students from UWA travel to Singapore to undertake an intensive and creative, hands-on TV & Video Production unit as part of their undergraduate degree where they produce a variety of projects including a studio-based talk show program and a TV drama.

“The unit is very popular with UWA students and often described as the highlight of their degree,” UWA Faculty of Arts Associate Dean (International) Nick Harney said.

Similar numbers of s tudents from Temasek have travelled to Perth to undertake an Australian Studies program at UWA where they are introduced to historical, cultural, and literary approaches to the study of Australia, including Indigenous Australia, nature and the environment, as well as colonial history.

“The student experience in both Singapore and Perth has introduced many students to different cultures and opportunities.  We look forward to a continuing relationship.” says Nick Harney. This relationship will undoubtedly be boosted by funding from the New Columbo Plan.

Media and Communication student Sarah Ison, who is currently taking part in the Temasek exchange, gave an address at the celebration and reflects that the unit has been an incredibly positive experience "The course offered us the invaluable opportunity to experience as close to a real life broadcast studio as possible and never have I been lucky enough to participate in such a close simulation of this media environment. The program gave me the clearest idea of what this industry actually looks like and in turn, a clearer idea of my future as well."
