One of our colleagues on campus recently questioned why our video guidelines insisted that "All areas of the University must only embed YouTube content that they own and manage - don't link content in from other users' YouTube accounts." The key word here was ‘must'.

Subsequent to a discussion about this, we have changed the guidelines to say ‘should'. While it is best to exercise reasonable caution when linking to external videos – since if the content is, for example, hijacked and changed to a Girls Gone Wild video, it may reflect awkwardly on the University &nndash; sometimes linking only to your own content just isn't possible.

Some things simply ‘must' be done with YouTube videos, such as ensuring accurate captions or a transcript are available for the use of people with aural impairments. But if you think you have a valid reason for questioning our guidelines on videos, and indeed any other matters, please feel free to raise it with us and explain your rationale.

We might just be convinced...
