Skin cancer? ‘It won't happen to me' is the common response...as it was by Clinton Heal, an otherwise healthy fit young man who has been living with Melanoma since 2005.

He will present a skin cancer seminar for UWA staff this week.

Two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they are 70.  Skin cancers account for around 80 per cent of all newly diagnosed cancers in Australia, and almost 800,000 skin cancer removal operations are performed every year.

This workshop aims to increase your knowledge of the different types of skin cancer and, most importantly, how you can reduce your risk.

Hear the story of Clinton Heal , who was diagnosed with Metastatic Melanoma nearly 10 years ago, at the age of 22.

Since then, he has had 34 secondary Melanoma tumours removed from throughout his body.

In 2008 Clinton founded Melanoma WA to help others get immediate access to the information and support they need during the early stages of the disease, to improve their prognosis.

He created Perth's March for Melanoma and the Melanoma WA Ball to further raise awareness and research funds. He devotes a lot of his time to talking at schools, mine sites, sporting clubs and companies about safety in the sun and awareness of skin cancer.

While living with cancer, Clinton has completed a Masters of Business Administration  and in 2010, he was appointed CEO of the Melanoma Cancer Support Association WA. His bravery, generosity and commitment to his cause have won him admiration and respect.  He was named the 2011 WA Young Australian of the Year and was a 2011 40under40 Business Award winner.

If you spend part of the working day outdoors or a lot of your leisure time outside, come along to the seminar on Friday 12 December from 10 - 11am in the Webb Lecture Theatre , in the Geology and Geography building.

The session is free for all UWA affiliated staff but it is necessary to register your attendance.
