We’ve heard a lot about UWA being a Top 100 university. In a pleasing development UWA’s YouTube channel has burst into the country’s top 100 corporate channels of the past year (to August 2014).

UWA was ranked 36th in Australia and 1st in the Education sector, in terms of what Chimney Group deemed ‘efficiency’, or “the total number of views the last 12 months divided by the total number of videos on the channel.”

Apple, ExxonMobil and Nestle were the top three company channels, and Monash University was the next highest-ranked university at 80 (ANU and Adelaide also scraped into the top 100).

In reality, we can thank Tim Minchin’s Occasional Address of September 2013 for bumping UWA up so high; as of 27 November, that video’s been viewed nearly 2.2 million times. Our next most viewed videos are… well, of an order of magnitude lower – in the tens of thousands.

Nonetheless, we do want to encourage the University community to continue to use YouTube as a tool of both promotion and information. A snappy 30-second or one-minute or even three-minute video, if done well, can be much more engaging than a page or two of text.

To facilitate our growing need for video productions, an experienced video journalist will soon be making quality videos for Marketing and Communications and managing our video media platform.

Please do read our advice on posting videos to YouTube and contact us if you have any questions.
