2014 has been another record year for the Western Australian Junior Mathematics Olympiad at The University of Western Australia, with 444 gifted young mathematicians from 37 schools taking part the highest ever participation the competition has ever seen.

The calculator-free competition - now in its sixteenth year - challenges students to tackle a series of mathematical problems using sheer brain power.

Students from Years 7, 8 and 9 solved mathematical problems individually and in teams to win prizes.

Dr Elizabeth Constable, former State Education Minister, was Guest of Honour and addressed students at the awards ceremony.

The Jack Bana Award for Excellence for the most outstanding team performance was awarded to a Year 9 team from Christ Church Grammar School. The School of Mathematics and Statistics (UWA) Award for Mathematical Excellence went to Year 9 student Yuelin Shen from Scotch College.

Other prize sponsors of the WAJO included: Data Analysis Australia, the Mathematics Association of WA, Curtin University, Edith Cowan University, Murdoch University, Data Analysis Australia, New Edition Bookshop and Parents and Friends' Federation of WA.

The Western Australian Mathematics Olympiads Committee (WAMOC) also presented several special student awards for exceptional performance at Mathematics competitions throughout the year.
