The 2014 Global Corporate Challenge wrapped up recently, and what a great effort from 350 staff participants - clocking up more than 264,000 kilometres and walking the equivalent of seven times around the world during the 100-day challenge.

There was a big increase in the percentage of staff in the GCC who moved to an active or highly active category (10,000 steps or above), rising from 15 per cent before the event to 73 per cent after it. In addition, 41 per cent of participants lost weight (on average 3kgs) and two-thirds of participants reported a decrease in stress.

Too Many Vices from the Vice-Chancellery took out the title of most active team at UWA, travelling 8,496 kilometres, and winning a $100 voucher for the University Club café. Second and third places went to I B Pro Fun and Go Go's , both from Engineering, Computing and Mathematics. The most improved team award went to We'll Never Walk Alone , also from Engineering, Computing and Mathematics, who won a twilight sail with UWA Sports.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) Alec Cameron, who participated in the event for the first time this year, congratulated staff on their achievements and teamwork at the wrap-up event on October 3 at the University Club. He urged participants to work towards a top three spot in the education and training sector in 2015, with UWA taking fourth place in the sector this year.

Professor Cameron was part of the winning team, along with Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor Dawn Freshwater and Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) Iain Watt.

Health and Wellbeing Officer Sarina Hilton challenged staff to keep up their healthy habits after the event, by scheduling walking meetings, installing break-reminder software on their computers, and/or joining in physical activity initiatives on campus.

She thanked supporters of the event, the University Club and UWA Sports.
