Fatal shark attacks have focused much attention on WA over the past few years.

But UWA neuroecologists Shaun Collin and Kara Yopak hope to turn that attention around and attract an international meeting of shark and ray researchers to Perth in 2018.

Professor Collin and Dr Yopak were winners of last year's Aspire  professional development awards, from the Perth Convention Bureau (PCB).

It enabled them to attend - and present at - the 2014 Sharks International Conference in Durban earlier this year.  Their research group, based in the School of Animal Biology , authored eight abstracts for the conference and Dr Yopak won best professional presentation, with Laura Ryan winning a prize for her student presentation.

The UWA group also presented a bid for the 2018 conference.

The PCB offers the same chance to UWA staff each year.  The Aspire awards are open to both academic and professional staff to attend an international conference that has the potential to be staged in WA.

The award is $5,000 to travel to the conference and covers registration and accommodation, as long as the winner puts in a bid to host a similar conference.

Short written applications are invited by 31 March next year.  Short-listed applicants will be interviewed.

Email PCB for more details and application information.
