Team UWA has returned from the 2014 Australian University Games with the most pennants out of any other Western Australian University.

Now in its 22 nd year, the Games attracted more than 7,100 student athletes from across Australia that took part in 32 sports.

The Games were hosted jointly in Sydney, New South Wales from 28 September-3 October by The University of Technology, Sydney, The University of New South Wales, The University of Sydney, Macquarie University, and The University of Western Sydney; and organised by Australian University Sport (AUS).

Team UWA's 350-strong contingent secured four gold, three silver and three bronze medals, placing fifth overall, and fourth per capita out of the 41 participating tertiary institutions from across Australia.

Highlights included:

  • UWA AFL bringing home silver.
  • UWA Men's Basketball got the gold in the bag, defeating Monash University in a thriller game.
  • UWA Men's Beach Volleyball beating Monash University undefeated in the grand final.
  • UWA Men's Futsal (Div 2) placing second, winning silver.
  • UWA Women's Futsal (Div 2) smashed Murdoch University in a western derby to win gold.
  • UWA Mixed Handball bringing home a bronze medal.
  • UWA Women's Hockey won bronze.
  • UWA Women's Squash (Div 1) defeated The University of Melbourne, winning gold.
  • UWA Sailing is bringing home gold for the fifth year in a row - and won the first team gold of the 2014 AUG.
  • UWA Ultimate once again won bronze.

At the end of the week-long competition, The University of Sydney was crowned overall champion; Bond University was named the Doug Ellis Per Capita champion; and Edith Cowan University received the John White Spirit of the Games award.

The University of Western Australia will simultaneously host the 2016 Australian University Games and the 2016 World University Sailing Championships.
