In just 12 months, The University of Western Australia has climbed three places in the Academic Ranking of World Universities, to be placed at 88 th in the world.

The result, announced today by the respected Centre for World-Class Universities at China's Shanghai Jiao Tong University, confirms UWA as one of the nation's - and the world's - best tertiary education institutions.

Only three other Australian universities have been included in the 2014 rankings: Melbourne University (ranked at 44), Australian National University (74) and Queensland (85). UWA is the only university in WA to make the top-100 list.

UWA Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Johnson, said UWA's climb from 91 st in the world to 88 th in one year confirmed that the University's strategies of attracting the most talented staff from around the globe, and increasing the numbers of publications in prestigious journals, were working.

"Over the past few years we have been advertising internationally to attract theĀ  best teachers and researchers," he said. "But we will not rest on our laurels. Our aim is to be included in the list of the world's top 50 universities by 2050.

"We are working hard to position the University for success in a changing and challenging teaching and research environment.

"We also recognise that the role of a leading university is to undertake research to address global problems - and UWA is already doing that, with our leading scientists taking on challenges such as feeding the world and securing sustainable energy."
