An Oscar-nominated documentary on the relationship between humankind and bees, the hunt for dark matter, a fascinating three minute thesis competition and the world's greatest journey of survival will feature in events being hosted by The University of Western Australia's Faculty of Science to mark National Science Week.

National Science Week celebrates Australia's talents and achievements in science, engineering, technology and innovation. The week kicks off at 10am on Saturday with the Perth Science Festival Launch at the Perth Cultural Centre, a free family event.

UWA-hosted shows and presentations will include a free airing of More Than Honey , the visually stunning, critically acclaimed 2012 film by Swiss filmmaker Marcus Imhoof which explores the symbiotic relationship between honeybees and humankind, and looks at why bees are facing extinction worldwide. More Than Honey will air at 3pm at the State Library Theatre.

Celebrated explorer Tim Jarvis comes to UWA to describe his modern-day journey to retrace - for the first time ever - the legendary 1914 expedition of Sir Ernest Shackleton. In a free talk and book signing, the veteran of multiple polar expeditions will describe his own attempt to recreate Shackleton's treacherous voyage over sea and mountain, outfitted solely with authentic equipment from Shackleton's time. Tim will speak at the Woolnough Lecture Theatre at UWA at 6pm on Monday, 18 August.

UWA science students will give fascinating rapid-fire rundowns of their research theses as part of a three minute thesis competition on Monday 18 August, from 1 - 2pm. Honours, Masters and PhD students completing their research within the Faculty of Science will be judged by their student audience on the quality and effectiveness of the presentation, given the time constraint. The competition will be held in the Social Science Lecture Room 1 (G28) at UWA.

The Hunt for Dark Matter is presented by Professor Juan Collar from the University of Chicago and will be held in the Ross Lecture Theatre, Physics Building at UWA on Friday 22 August from 6 - 7pm.
