The University diverted almost nine tonnes of its electronic waste from landfill through reuse and recycling last month, in an effort to reduce its environmental impact.

UWA's Campus Management estimates that 25 per cent of the equipment will be reused through refurbishments. Remaining electronics will be disassembled and their recovered materials recycled.

Approximately 37 tonnes of carbon emissions have been abated through the initiative. Hazardous substances, including lead, mercury and brominated flame retardants (BFRs), have also been prevented from leaching into the environment.

Alain Twynham , from Campus Management, said 16 university sections participated in the collection.

"The downstream processing of the electronic components will be conducted in a socially ethical manner," he said.
