Team UWA is ready to bring the best form the west, with team members from nationally-ranked to first-time competitors training over the winter to get ready for the 2014 Australian University Games (28 September to 3 October) in Sydney, New South Wales.

The Australian University Games (AUG) is the flagship event on the university sporting calendar and is a week-long competition which is expected to bring together more than 7,000 competitors from 42 universities across Australia including nearly 350 representing Team UWA.

With 31 sports being held at venues across Sydney from Sunday 28 September to Friday 3 October, Uni Games will no doubt live up to its reputation as the largest multi-sport competition held annually in Australia.

Tipped to win

The UWA men's beach volleyball and men's and women's water polo teams are all tipped to do well, with many of their players  no stranger to national and international competition.

For first-time AUG competitors Sam Halley and Matt Pallot (beach volleyball), fierce competition is the name of the game, with Sam recently winning bronze at the National Junior Beach Volleyball Competition in Adelaide.

The dynamic duo are currently training three times a week in preparation for the Games, and will ramp up their efforts to daily training as the event draws closer.

When asked which university they think will bring the strongest competition, both Halley and Pallot agreed that they'll be keeping a close eye on Monash and Bond Universities.

For many of the men and women on the water polo team, this year's AUG will also be their first time competing at the event, but like Halley and Pallot, most of them have been competing alongside each other for years.

The men's and women's side unanimously agreed The University of Sydney will bring the toughest competition, but with UWA's team members having played at events such as the FINA World League Rounds, World University Games and the National Water Polo League grand final, the sides are confident they will bring their best to the pool.

You can show your support for Team UWA at the team rally on Wednesday 18 September in the Octagon Theatre at 2pm. Vice Chancellor Paul Johnson will be the guest of honour and will send off the team on behalf of The University.
