Staff, alumni, ALLY members and friends gathered at the Business School last month to celebrate the anniversary of an event in New York that sparked the world's Gay Revolution.

The Stonewall Riots erupted in the early hours of 29 June 1969, when police raided a popular gay bar, the Stonewall Inn.  The raid wasn't unusual in an era when homosexuality was illegal in the US everywhere expect Illinois.

But this night, the streets erupted into violent protests and demonstrations that lasted for six days. It marked a major turning point in the modern gay civil rights movement in the US and around the world.

The office of Equity and Diversity, the US Consulate General and the Business School hosted a screening of Stonewall Uprising to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the tide-turning riots and to mark International Pride Month.

Daniel J Tarapacki from the US Consulate General's office in Perth addressed about 50 people before the documentary was screened in the Tony Howarth case study room. Malcolm Fialho, senior diversity officer, spoke after the screening.

Feedback indicated a happy and supportive event with Mr Tarapacki expressing an interest in co-hosting more similar occasions.
