After an accident, a destructive storm or any other event that turns your life upside down, you need the support of the community.

Insurance company SGIO community awards program supports the people around Australia who dedicate their time and energy to making their community safer, more sustainable and better prepared to respond to emergencies.

Assistance from your insurance company only goes part of the way to helping you through disasters.  It is community volunteers who fill in the gap.

Aden Date is one of these people. He is the manager of the Guild Volunteering Hub and finds opportunities for students who want to volunteer and co-ordinates volunteer programs.

He is fronting Volunteering WA in the SGIO program, in the hope of securing the People's Choice Award and funding for a video that will help people to understand how they can best help each other in times of emergency.

Volunteering WA plans to produce and promote a video that educates the general public on the best way to give donations of time, accommodation or goods/services following a local disaster.

The project will enable West Australians to build community resilience through understanding what an affected community really needs during emergencies, and reducing waste from donations that are not wanted or needed.

Aden said that if their funding was doubled or tripled through the People's Choice Award, the video could be promoted more widely. Volunteering WA could also design and produce a data collection tool to effectively record offers of support from the community. This would lead to better and faster matching of goods and services with those in need.
