Members of the community are being urged to get involved in research projects at The University of Western Australia either through participating in the actual research or helping us use the outcomes.

UWA Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Robyn Owens said the process, known as crowdsourcing, was part of the University's wider aim of engaging with the global community.

"Crowdsourcing gets the community directly involved in our research at UWA, whether that is by participating as subjects, as citizen scientists or by making a contribution to make the research happen," Professor Owens said.

Research projects will be selected and promoted through the UWA community for either funding or for participation. Crowdsourcing projects will have their own sites that detail participation.

The projects will be funded through a variety of crowdfunding sites. Crowdfunding asks the community to put money into funding research projects. In return, UWA will keep those involved updated as the research progresses and share the outcomes of that research.

"Over the next few months, six projects will be commissioned for Crowdfunding or Crowdsourcing and we will be posting information and videos about the process as we go along," Professor Owens said.

"At all times, those who have submitted funding for projects will be informed about how their money has made a contribution to the success of the project."
