Two engineering students at The University of Western Australia (UWA), Mr Hugo Breakey and Mr Scott List, were honoured last night with Clough Engineering Scholarships to complete their Masters in Professional Engineering.

Due to their continued, exceptional academic performance, last year’s scholarship winners Jessica Regan and Joel Valli also had their scholarships renewed for the second year.

Recognising the importance of thinking globally while supporting communities locally across Western Australia and the nation, former Clough Chairman and Managing Director Dr Harold Clough was instrumental in creating one of the first successful university-industry partnerships 45 years ago.

Since then, UWA and Clough’s pursuit of excellence in education has produced outstanding engineers and supported the development of a resources sector which makes Western Australia the powerhouse of the national economy.

Clough has awarded more than 200 scholarships to the brightest engineering students in WA. Past recipients include top government, business and resource industry leaders.

Last night’s event included speeches by two inspiring leaders, Clough CEO and Managing Director Kevin Gallagher and Director of the Cambodian Children’s Fund Scott Neeson.

Recently voted CEO Magazine’s CEO of the Year, Kevin Gallagher began his ambitious journey to deliver transformational growth at Clough in late 2011, galvanising the company’s workforce to deliver record financial results, despite turbulent market conditions.

Former top Hollywood executive, Scottish-born Australian Scott Neeson turned his back on a life of luxury to support impoverished and neglected children in Cambodia a decade ago.

Both speakers shared fascinating insights into their lives and leadership journeys.

The Clough Scholar Program reaffirms the longstanding relationship between Clough, the Clough family and the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics at UWA. Clough awards four scholarships each year to top students who have demonstrated leadership capability for the duration of their two-year Masters of Professional Engineering degree.

“The scholarship program is a wonderful opportunity for its recipients. They are provided financial support to further their engineering studies and a kick start to their career through a renowned global engineering firm,” said Winthrop Professor John Dell, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics.

Kevin Gallagher expressed delight at welcoming two new students to the Clough Scholars family.

“This year marks the 45th anniversary of the Clough Scholars Program and a long and enduring relationship between Clough and The University of Western Australia,” said Mr Gallagher.

“Many have already benefitted from Harold Clough’s vision and I am delighted to say that Western Australia’s brightest engineers will continue to benefit as Clough continues to honour this great program with the award of four new scholarships.”
