A new program offering international and local students a pathway into the second year of a science degree at The University of Western Australia will be launched this Wednesday.

UWA law graduate and former Federal Justice Minister, the Honourable Christopher Ellison, who is also current Chair of WA Academic Board, Study Group Higher Education Institute, will host the event.

UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Johnson said the Taylors College Diploma of Science was designed specifically for students seeking an alternative pathway to UWA’s Science majors in engineering, computing, mathematics and physics.

Taylors College is based at UWA Claremont and provides the UWA Foundation Program, a foundation course for international students as well as the Diploma of Science for international and local students.

“The combined educational expertise of our University and Taylors College provides students with an academic stepping-stone into tertiary studies,” Professor Johnson said.

“UWA is proud of its reputation for excellence and record of providing an outstanding student experience. Partnerships, such as our links with Taylors College, enable us to extend our teaching networks and further enrich the education of our students.”

The diploma is comparable to the first year of a Bachelor of Science degree at UWA and on successful completion guarantees entry into the second year of a UWA Science major in engineering, computing, mathematics or physics.

The new Diploma was developed in consultation with UWA’s Faculties of Science and Engineering, Computing and Mathematics.

Taylors College is part of Study Group, a leading international education provider specialising in world-class university access and English language programs.

Warren Jacobson, Managing Director of Study Group Australasia, said the Diploma was the second of its kind that had been developed in consultation with UWA, following the commerce pathway program launched in 2011.

“Taylors College and the University have been working together for over 15 years and we are proud of our close relationship,” Mr Jacobson said.

“Taylors College prides itself on providing a supportive learning environment for international students.  Our educators and staff understand international student needs in an intimate teaching environment with small class sizes and dedicated academic support where it is needed."

“Local students can now also benefit in preparing for entry to one of Australia’s top universities. All of this ensures that we are providing well prepared, quality students for university studies."

“Innovative programs such as the Taylors Diploma of Science will help keep both Study Group and UWA in leadership positions in this important sector.”
