On 6 March, the 99 th Annual AMEB Awards Ceremony was held in the Octagon Theatre at The University of Western Australia. The ceremony began with a concert which showcased the talents of a range of Diplomates and special Award Winners from 2013. After the concert, awardees were acknowledged with Certificates of Excellence, Diplomas and Special Awards.

This year's concert comprised a wide variety of instruments, including percussion - an appropriate addition in light of the 2013 launch of the new AMEB Percussion Syllabus. The concert performers were Gabrielle Ruttico (viola), Joseph Chan (piano), Sarah Langridge (speech), Samuel Cohen-Cooke (clarinet), Katie Thomas and Adam Tan (percussion), Wei-Juen Lo (cello), Tianchi Ren (piano) and Emily Leung (violin). Please read the program for further details of the concert.

Following the Concert was the presentation of awards, starting with all Certificate of Excellence recipients. These candidates received an A+ for their music or speech practical exam from grade one to Certificate, 100% for their grades two to three written exam or 95% and over for their grade four or upwards written exam.

During the evening other award winners were also recognised with special prizes for outstanding achievements in their discipline. These were: Gabrielle Ruttico - Australian Strings Association WA Award for best 7 th /8 th Grade Strings candidate in 2013; Sarah Langridge - Speech and Drama Teachers' Association of WA Award for best Drama and Performance Diploma candidate in 2013; René Kuan - A J Leckie Award in association with the West Australian Music Teachers' Association for best Associate Diploma candidate in 2013 and Wei-Juen Lo - J B Vincent Memorial Award for best Licentiate Diploma candidate in 2013.

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of the Associate and Licentiate Diploma awardees as well as a Fellowship in Music Australia (FMusA). Successful Diploma candidates need to pass a high level practical performance examination and an additional written component. These candidates deserve special recognition for the high level of preparation and performance required, especially to pass the FMusA which is a very rare achievement. The FMusA recipient for 2013 was Emily Leung.

We congratulate all concert performers, award winners, their teachers and families for all the hard work that is necessary to reach these levels of achievement.
