Visiting plant conservation biologist, Dr Peggy Fiedler, Director of the Natural Reserve System at the University of California will visit The University of Western Australia on 13 March to give a public lecture on the important role of field stations and research centres.

Field stations, marine labs, and research centres will play key roles in the development of a coordinated global strategy to tackle the dramatic and global environmental change that is the challenge of our generation.

According to Professor Fiedler, "This strategy must address, at minimum, ‘big data' and dark data, enhanced collaboration and networking, investment in infrastructure, and training of a new generation of field scientists comfortable not only with intricate research questions but also communicating the importance of field sciences to human wellbeing. "

Professor Fiedler's lecture will provide context for understanding the role of field stations and other protected areas by discussing specific examples of the UCNRS's research programmes in advancing our knowledge about the natural world. She will also discuss potential new partnerships within the five Mediterranean-ecosystem climate regions worldwide, including Western Australia.

Professor Fiedler is currently working with the Centre of Excellence in Natural Resource Management at The University of Western Australia Albany campus and is a 2014 UWA Institute of Advanced Studies Short Stay Visiting Fellow.
