Researchers at The University of Western Australia and Royal Perth Hospital are conducting a study to see whether a face wash and gel containing tea tree oil is effective for treating mild to moderate acne (pimples).

"Previous studies with tea tree oil suggest that it is effective but more information is required," study co-ordinator Dr Kate Hammer said.

The researchers are seeking people living in Perth with mild to moderate acne aged between 16 and 45 to take part in the study.

Participants must be able to apply product for 12 weeks, attend four clinic visits and must not currently be on antibiotics or anti-acne medication.

This study has been approved by the Royal Perth Hospital Human Research Ethics Committee.
